Michael Crichton's Unexpected Death

Celebrated author Michael Crichton died today at 66 after a "private battle" with cancer.

Crichton, author of Jurassic Park, Sphere and a creator of the television show ER, was considered a controversial figure for many of his views on science, and was a highly visible and vocal spokesperson against popular theories about global warming, which he took on in his book State of Fear.

Born October 23, 1942, in Chicago, he grew up in the suburbs of New York and recently celebrated his 66th birthday. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, he wrote and published several works under pen names while he was in college. The Andromeda Strain (1969) was his first bestseller.

"Michael's talent out-scaled even his own dinosaurs of 'Jurassic Park,' " said Steven Spielberg, Crichton's decades-long friend, according to The Associated Press. "He was the greatest at blending science with big theatrical concepts, which is what gave credibility to dinosaurs again walking the Earth. ... Michael was a gentle soul who reserved his flamboyant side for his novels. There is no one in the wings that will ever take his place."

His death was announced in a press release by his family. "While the world knew him as a great story teller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us — and entertained us all while doing so — his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes."
