Unhappiness with New Violent Video Game Study
Post Date: Nov 5, 2008
Category: General
Recently, a study was released by Pediatrics, which seems to link violent media (including video games) to aggression in children and teens. However, recently, arguments against the study's findings have also been published, in the same journal.

Critics -- chief among them Dr. Christopher Ferguson -- cite problems with the study's control setup, and also points out a poor relationship between the US and Japanese results of the study. "[Something] that they attempted to do with this study, and I think it reflects some of their irritation with the criticisms or counter-arguments that they've encountered, is this U.S., Japan comparison. People point out all the time that Japan is saturated with violent media, probably more, if anything, than the United States. They've got the hentai, the sexualized violence, and all that kind of stuff, and yet they're a very low violent crime society. So the argument is if violent media causes aggressiveness, how come it's not doing it in Japan?" Ferguson said in an interview with PC World

More about this argument, and the study, can be found on GamePolitics.com: http://www.gamepolitics.c…-study-pc-world-interview

i think that violent games don't encourage violence......it lets people 'act out' stuff that they would never do in real life, i don't think that people play saints row 2 and say "Hey, throwing people of a bridge...that was fun in stilwater, i'll try that in (insert town name here)!!". If a game does influence an individual to commit violent acts, then that individual was already disturbed, as they let a fictional world affect their behaviour in the real world, this is why i do understand the age ratings on games, younger players are much more susceptible to outside influences on their behaviour, But still don't think that games have that much of an affect on most sane people!

They don't. And one of the most telling things in this comparison between Japanese gamers and US gamers is FAMILY LIFE. Japanese culture produces strong, nurturing, supportive family units, where as in the US, that's a rare thing.

How often do you hear about some kid going on a shooting spree, and then find out that his parents and teachers and friends KNEW that he had been having trouble with bullies, or with other things, BUT THEY DIDN'T STOP TO LISTEN OR DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT....

Its just easier to blame it on the game anyway, that way they don't have to work at finding what the real cause is!

That way they don't have to worry about OFFENDING people.

Personally, I think if we all spent a little more time pointing out the stupid shit people do, the more people who do stupid shit would work to not do stupid shit.

People are constantly pointing out to me when I do something without thinking. And yanno what? With few exceptions, I don't do that shit anymore, once it's been pointed out.

At BEST, violent games only give kids ideas, but even that has been disputed. As a psychology major, I have seen study after study on this subject, and the studies which actually have been done CORRECTLY, following the right guidelines for performing research and meeting criteria including interaction results and acceptable correlation statistics have all shown that the youth who play violent videogames and have higher exposure have actually LESS violent lifestyles. This is due to the fact that these games allow the kids to get their aggression out. Most kids are not dumb enough to say, wow its cool in the game so it must be cool to do in real life, and it must be okay. No, they know better, and the kids who participate in these violent acts were going to anyways, it is only coincidence that they play violent games or commit acts similar to games they've played. The games however are not the cause of the violence.

I agree 100%. As a parent, I take full responsibility for whether or not my kids know right from wrong. Of course, they're both individuals, and as they get older, they can choose to ignore that knowledge.

In very young children, yes, it IS difficult, sometimes, to tell the difference between what's cool in a game and what's cool for real. Which is why there are ratings systems for the games. But then again, how many kindergartners have been the cause of school shootings? Not many (none).

Every generation finds something to blame. In the 40's it was television, then rock music (which is STILL taking the rap for stupid people doing stupid shit 60 years later), then Dungeons and Dragons, then video games, then rap music....

:mischief: This is obviously a topic I can go on and on about, so I'll just...stop. Now.
