As many witnessed tonight, Barak Obama was elected the 44th President of the United states by an overwhelming majority of Electoral votes. [At the time of this writing, there are five states uncounted: Alaska, Arkansas, Montana, Indiana and North Carolina.]
Shortly before midnight, Barak Obama took the stage in Grant Park, Chicago, Illinois (his hometown), to officially accept his election into service as President of the United States, the single most visible political office in the nation. He was accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters, Sasha and Malia. His speech came after congratulatory phone calls from his opponent Senator John McCain, as well as sitting President George W. Bush. In his victory speech, President Elect Obama opened with comments about how anything is possible. "We are are and always will be the United States of America," Obama said. He also spoke of change that has come to America, a foundation point of his campaign. Obama moved on to speak kindly and eloquently about McCain, and said that he looks forward to working with him and Alaskan Governor, Sarah Palin. He also acknowledged the support of Vice Presidential Elect Joe Baiden, and the love and support of his wife Michelle. In a whimsical note, he promised his daughters a new puppy to accompany them to the White House. "I was never the likeliest candidate for this office," Obama said. "...A government of the people, by the people, for the people has not perished from this earth; this is your victory." Obama went on to speak about the problems the nation -- and the world -- are facing currently, including the economic crisis, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, damaged political alliances with other nations, energy and climate. He promised that however long it would take, we would recover, at which point the crowd interrupted with chants of "YES WE CAN!" "Let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility....in this country, we rise and fall as one nation, as one people," Obama said, speaking of setting aside partisanship to move the country forward and "heal the divides that have held back our progress." He continued on to quote Abraham Lincoln "we are not enemies, but friends...though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection." "America, we have come so far, we have seen so much. But there is still so much more to do." President Elect Obama will be sworn into office at noon on January 20th, 2009 on the steps of the United States Congress. The crowd gathered to celebrate his election in Chicago included Rev. Jesse Jackson and television personality Oprah Winfrey. Security measures to protect Obama were described by many as "unprecidented" and included walls of bulletproof glass around him as he spoke on stage in front of a multitude of American flags. In his consolation speech, McCain spoke with pride and dignity of uniting the country, of service, and of faith. He also offered his condolences to President Elect Obama for the recent passing of his grandmother.
