Internet Addiction = Metal Illness

So, this came out a while ago, but I just so happened to stumble upon it again...

Back in March, the American Journal of Psychiatry says that compulsive internet use such as "excessive gaming, sexual pre-occupations and e-mail/text messaging" are all signs of internet addiction, and it should be classified as a mental illness. Like other addictions, such as alcoholism and drug addiction.

Like both addictions, people addicted to the internet experience cravings, withdrawal, and tolerance... which only lead to more of a dependence on the internet and thus results in more time being spent on the internet. Some even neglect sleep, eating, going to the bathroom, breathing... you know, the basic human needs to SURVIVE.

    Did you know internet addiction disorder started out as a hoax but some people just ran with it?

    Of particular note:
    "Internet Addiction Disorder is not a true addiction and may in fact be no more than a symptom of other, existing disorders...

    * A pathological gambler is a pathological gambler regardless of whether the gambling is done on a computer or face-to-face.
    * A person with poor impulse control can lose sleep over a suspenseful novel or favorite television show just as easily as he or she can lose sleep over an exciting computer game or the temptation to click on another web link.
    * A person with a sexual obsession is still a person with a sexual obsession, whether the pornography is viewed on a screen or on paper.
    * A person who shops obsessively (including during a manic phase) has an obsessive shopping problem whether the purchases are made in person, by mail, by phone, or online.
    * A problem day trader, who has a form of pathological gambling, is still a problem day trader regardless of whether the stock trading is done by computer, over the phone, or face-to-face."

    The more mental illnesses drug companies can get published, the more money they make, in my opinion.

    They investigated this topic and decided to put off decision for a while, it was controversial. They said they'd revisit it in like 10 years or something.
