On Monday, Gaia Online announced it has managed to raise $11 million after a Series C funding round conducted by Institutional Venture Partners. Now GO has about $32 million and is currently one of the most popular virtual communities with about five million visitors every month.
With the raising of these funds, various additions will be made to the website, one of which will be a Flash-based MMO, which will come out this summer. The company seeks to continually improve its online environment to help compete with other virtual environments, such as Teen Second Life, Habbo Hotel, and Club Penguin. Estimations are that the user base of virtual worlds will more than double by 2011, possibly reaching twenty million members or beyond. (Source: http://www.efluxmedia.com…1_Million_More_20345.html) |
