Scientists are coming ever closer to cloaking technology in the real world now, and are going through two different approaches. The first approach (and the only one that has actually come off the math pages into real life) is to use metamaterials that would redirect the light to look like it's going straight through the object, when in reality it's it's actually being bent around the object. This type of technology has two working models, one that only works 2 dimensionally on a microscopic scale, and one that works, but has visible distortions when viewed with x-rays. The other technology is using a superlens that actually bends light back onto itself, effectively making itself invisible.
