Yes, another news story has cropped up about how bad games consoles are.
Apparently they let the paedophile get his/her 'foot in the door' when it comes to meeting your child. What's annoying is, no one seems to have mentioned that most of these kids have unrestricted, unmonitored access to the net, chatrooms, and the hundreds of thousands of dodgy websites that float around the net. Somehow, compared to that, the console is now the devil. Full story here |

It feels, to me, like another way to avoid blame when poorly raised children turn into morons with dead end jobs.

They pretend it bothers them so they can blame it on someone else. "Your Xbox Live service got my child <insert something>! You're irresponsible, Microsoft" is something I see being uttered a lot more frequently in the coming years, because the parent never actually tried to get things across to kids.
Most parents seem to think their children won't listen, or are not experienced enough to understand the concept - Which is complete crap. A good parent would have a bond with their child sufficient to know how to communicate it to them without the child sitting there wondering what the hell they're talking about.
My dad and I had a very good understanding of each other. It shows, I think, in who I am as a person. I was never subjected to long talks about how X will happen if I do Y. I was told in a way that made sense to me that doing Y could well cause X, or that Y should be done because of X. Considering how many of those short, to the point statements I remember and live by, I'd say my parents have done a pretty good job of getting the fundamentals across - Something newer parents simply won't do, for reasons best known to themselves.
Perhaps 'Parents to be' should be made to play a parenting 'game' on a console for the 9 or so months leading up to the birth. Might teach them a thing or two.

1. Kinds are probably under 13, not allowed to use most internet crap.
2. If your kid falls for the predator crap, you kinda failed as a parent, it's not like they were kidnapped off the street or something.
3. The only time the game CONSOLES can do this stuff is in one of those weird Japanese comics involving random fucking tentacles.
4. Hahahahahaha.

2: I see where you're coming from, but admittedly it's not always the parents fault. Sure they should shoulder a lot of the blame, but it can't always be all their fault.
3: You seen those crazy Japanese consoles? Those things look like one hell of a night out

Usually I get very depressed at the fact that they all sound like the biggest 14 year old nerds you've ever met, and that their voices essentially ruin the game.
I'm... still really quite confused as to why x-box allows for video messaging.

Yeah. The video chat is weird. Maybe it's so people can see each other sucking at a game or something.

Seriously tho, I agree with you that parents should know well enough how to communicate with their children that they can convey the seriousness of this to them. First step: monitor their gaming. This ones a no-brainer. Just see what your kids are playing, ask them questions about it, at least PRETEND to care if only for a bit of knowledge and personal gain. My parents come and watch what I'm playing all the time. Even though I know they don't like video games.
Weird stuff is bound to happen online. Always has and always will. I just think that uts up to all of us to learn (parents especially) how to avoid or prevent or even just ignore it.
I'm gonna stop now tho cuz I'm only 17 and I feel weird giving parents advice =B

hehe anyway about parents monitoring kids is probably dead on. A lot of people give children a console to 'get rid of the whining' it's as simple as that. And other people do it to make there kids happy. Hmm to be honest my parents never cared for what I played but I always did show them even when I was a kid. Parents should threat there kids more as a human being instead of a child that is 'dumb' and they should also interact more with them.
anyway parents should also teach their children what they are allowed to do IRL and what not. Like there was this article about this professor who let his kid play HL2 and GTA and he said that it helped his kid with orientation, language skills (cause you hear a different language if your mothertongue isn't english) and what he did also do is when his kid did something that was not accepted IRL he would mention it right after the kid did it...
Like in HL2 the kid threw a tv outside the window which you can do at the very beginning. His dad told him not to do it with their tv otherwise he wouldn't be able to do this or this anymore...
hmm
