ASUS's release of the P5E3 Deluxe motherboard heralds another win for Linux as a mainstream OS. Within seconds of booting the board will load a Linux desktop environment equipped with Mozilla and Skype based applications; a desktop that reviews have called "sleek" and "stylish" and "not at all as bad as expected".
However don't expect to save a whole lot with this integrated "OS". Sporting a $360USD price tag, and requiring DDR3 memory, you're still going to be paying Microsoft style prices to build your system. My personal thought is hopefully a laptop version of the motherboard is on the way, where I think it's usefulness will be more fully realized. ...according to some article on some tech blog i read. Now, it may well be many years down the line before they have that sort of implementation. But if there low-end systems are still popular, by the time I need/want an upgrade, it might be available.
