For lovers of The Godfather game, there may not be a sequel after all. There's been a bit of a buzz around the fact that EA are currently planning a second game based on The Godfather series of films, but today they're making news in a way they may not want. Mario Puzo, the author of the books the films are based on, entered into an agreement with Paramount Pictures in 1992, entitling him to a "significant share" of any audio of visual products that inculded elements of the movie trilogy. Allegedly, his estate (Mario died in 1999) have seen no royalties from the 2006 game based on the storyline, and now Anthony Puzo (Mario's son) is suing Paramount for damages and breach of contract. The suit claims the 1992 agreement was in place because Puzo was a "young, relatively unknown author, struggling to support his family" when Paramount bought the rights to The Godfather for an "extremely low price". EA, who created the game, were not mentioned in the US$1million lawsuit. They released the first Godfather game in 2006 for Xbox, PS2 and PC, and it has since been adapated for Xbox 360, Wii, PS3 and PSP, with each edition getting some platform-specific changes. Paramount has not yet made any official response or comment. |
