IBM and Los Alamos National Lab have broken the 1 petaflop barrier with their supercomputer, Roadrunner. This is the first supercomputer on the Top500 Linpack list to sustain 1 petaflop, making it the fastest computer in the world.
Let's put this in perspective: Roadrunner is twice as fast as BlueGene/L (Lawrence Livermore National Lab/IBM), and BlueGene is three times faster than the next fastest supercomputer, JUGENE (Forschungszentrum Juelich (FZJ)/IBM). What's particularly interesting are Roadrunner's specs. It uses a bit more than 6,900 AMD Opteron dual core processors (used for file system I/O) and 12,960 IBM PowerXCell 8i processors (used for mathematics and things that are CPU-intensive). The power cells used in Roadrunner are based on the ones used in the Playstation 3. Roadrunner is using Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Top500 will release the June 2008 list on June 17th. It won't be obsolete for at least five months; the next Top500 list is in November. I don't know if IBM will be able to beat their own technology so fast, though, either. BlueGene/L held first since June 2005, so it took IBM three years to get together a system to beat it (and they very soundly beat their own technology).
If no-one has noticed yet, I love clusters.
