Apple and Intel, not sitting so close at the moment
Post Date: Apr 27, 2008
Some of you may have noticed that Intel recently showed off their Atom processor line. Some of you, myself included, expected to see these processors in Apples other hardware, like say, their iPhone, Touch, and the countless other iPods.

However, as of the 23rd of April, Apple own PA Semi, who're known best for their 64-bit power efficient processors. I find it unlikely that Apple forked over that cash (Reportedly $278m) for no good reason.

For those that don't know, the founder of PA Semi is Dan Dobberpuhl, who has had quite a big hand in the design of the Alpha and StrongARM processors from DEC, so he knows what he's doing with chip design.

While this doesn't say much for Apples deal with Intel for their desktops/laptops/etc, it's going to be interesting to see what pans out for the Atom processor, with Apple shunning it from the get go, and not doing it quietly.
