Some new cell service providers have begun a service to accept customer's cell phones from other providers and unlock them so that the customer does not need to buy a new phone every time they switch providers. MetroPCS is the first company to do this, but it would appear that many more may follow suit. Also, apparently if you are with Verizon or Sprint, when you leave their service they are required by law to unlock your phone for you so you can use it with your next service.

Scientists are coming ever closer to cloaking technology in the real world now, and are going through two different approaches. The first approach (and the only one that has actually come off the math pages into real life) is to use metamaterials that would redirect the light to look like it's going straight through the object, when in reality it's it's actually being bent around the object. This type of technology has two working models, one that only works 2 dimensionally on a microscopic sc . . . Read more

A new study says that the reason broadband isn't as widespread is because many people actually just plain do not want it rather than not having access to it. At least 19% refuse to upgrade for any reason, while only 14% say it's unavailable and 35% say it's too expensive (the remainder put other).

Scientists now have the ability to listen to the natural sounds that Earth makes, the sounds produced by the same mechanism that makes the auroras. It sounds like a chirping sound, very high pitched.

You can go listen to it here.
YouTube was recently ordered to hand over the logs of what users watched what videos on their site in the lawsuit over whether or not YouTube had the ability to remove copyrighted material faster than they did. They were resisting citing that turning over the logs would take away some user privacy, in addition to costing a lot of money (the requested information accounts for 12 terabytes of data). It is unknown whether Google will appeal or just ask for the search to be more narrowed down.

Yes, another news story has cropped up about how bad games consoles are.

Apparently they let the paedophile get his/her 'foot in the door' when it comes to meeting your child. What's annoying is, no one seems to have mentioned that most of these kids have unrestricted, unmonitored access to the net, chatrooms, and the hundreds of thousands of dodgy websites that float around the net.

Somehow, compared to that, the console is now the devil.

In wake of the non-existent rape scene announcement from a Connecticut Senator, New York officials linked a recent teen crime spree to Grand Theft Auto 4. They based this connection off of an arrested suspect who said the only reason they went on a crime spree was because they "got drunk and thought it would be fun to play out GTA4"

The survey examines the financial commitment of a 30 year gaming lifetime, which generally encompasses the 'peak' gaming years, 18-48. During this time, the average gamer will spend $US30,000 on video games, or gaming related h . . . Read more

A team at MIT has developed and built a new solar dish that has the capability to melt steel at it's focal point. It amplifies the sun's energy 1,000 times, and can be very useful in developing more forms of fossil fuel independence. The best thing about it? It is made completely of aluminum pipes and mirrors, so it has a relatively low price, especially compared to other forms of solar power such as photovoltaic cells.
